Floodplain management is fundamental to reducing losses from floods. Adopting regionally consistent floodplain management practices, such as managing development in the floodplain, will help to reduce potential catastrophic flood damage and improve community resilience to flooding.

  • Update and improve hydrologic data and models for the LA River watershed.
  • Update and improve flood inundation mapping, and consider local assessments for flood risk.
  • Manage floodplain development and support community activities in coordination with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
  • Support communities in maintaining and improving their Community Rating System scores.
  • Work to ensure the levees along the LA River are certified by FEMA.
  • Encourage flood resilient projects in the 1% (100-year) floodplain.
  • Encourage resilient retrofits of existing structures in the 1% (100-year) and critical infrastructure in the 0.2% (500-year) floodplains.
